Characterization is complex. Characterization comprises a large host of any writer’s style and technique for conveying a story with authenticity. Considering the main characters in this novel, respond to the following prompts. Be prepared to discuss your responses with your classmates in a Socaratic Seminar. You are not required to discuss each character in each category! Select the character, or more than one, that fits most comfortably in the category. However, each character should be considered at least once, some repeatedly.

CONSIDER: Sydney Carton, Madam Defarge, Doctor Manette, Charles Darnay & Lucie Manette, Jarvis Lorry, & Marquis Evremonde

CHARACTER IN ACTION:

1.How do they behave in different situations?

Charles Darnay: When the choices of risking his life to save one and live simple and happily come to him, he courageously chose the former. Darney is the man with all splendid qualities, such as integrity and bravery. But he is also kind of ideal, assuming he can save the servant, for the revolution has already erupted and there is little he can offer.

Sydney Carton: He is always being a worthless man until he finds his deep love for Lucie. He makes a huge step when he decides to sacrifice himself for the love of others. He does not hesitate too much to take this step since he has no time left. Carton seems like a futile person who cannot accomplish anything; however, he directly reaches the top in the end of his life.

2.How do they differ from other characters in some situations?

Madam Defarge is oppressed at the early of her life, so she starts to oppress others when she stands on the higher position. She accumulates all her hates and outburst of hates arrives as the revolution breaks out. She is carrying his wrath along her life, which ends abruptly by Miss Pross.

Manatte Lucie is very much like Darney. She has all the virtues so that she and Darney are perfect to each other. As a woman, she cannot really do anything to help husband out but begging. She looks so weak that Carton wants to protect her and give her happiness and warmth.

3.How is their action made logical by what we know of their thoughts and motives?

Defarge is oppressed by Marquis Evremonde's family for a long time. She must be treated awfully as the description of others can tell. Therefore, she seeks opportunities to revenge for everyone that is related to Evremonde, including Darney and Lucie. Defarge's action is pretty obvious.

Doctor Manatte is calumniated by Evremonde decades ago, but he still accepts Darney and tries evrything to save him. The major reason is that he loves his daughter so much that he can do anything for her. And Darney is also like a perfect man. So Manatte is in favor of him.

4.How is their action made logical by what we know of the theme?

The theme of the novel is all about resurrection. Therefore, Darney's existence and actions are very essential to display this idea. He is the major one that performs the theme of resurrection.

Well, this certainly started out well. You offered some detailed descriptions and analysis, but then you retorted to one-word answers with no explanation. Looks like you ran out of time. Remember to plan on at least two hours of homework in this class since we have a double block. This is incomplete.
